(Our Tech Blog) We’re certainly caught off-guard with this recent announcement made by Razer of unleashing its new gaming laptopcalled The Blade. And for those who are wondering if this one has any link with the Switchblade concept previewed on CES last January — your hunch is correct! In fact, this is the company’s first publicized product based on theSwitchblade device, and boy it looks like a hunk on a Harley motorcycle!

Basically, the Razer Blade sports a 17.3-inch LED backlit display with 1080p resolution running 2.8GHz Intel Core-i7 2640M CPU (Sandy Bridge) with NVIDIA GeForce GT55M (Optimus-Ready) plus 2GB DDR5 Virtual Memory for its video-card. It has an 8GB DDR3 memory, 320GB 7200 RPM SATA HDD, built-in HD webcam, WiFi & Bluetooth support and weighs in for 6.97 pounds.
The thing that separates Blade from other gaming laptops is its Switchblade UI which is a set of customizable keys on the orthodox side of your keyboard along with a 480 x 800 LCD trackpad which acts as a multitouch or an auxiliaryscreen so you can take a peek with your current game. It comes with 10 customizable keys with icons that illuminates depending on what keys you’ve programmed within it. The company also promised it’ll also come with a USB 3.0 port when it ships next quarter for a whopping price of 2,799 USD!

Wrap-up
If you’ll ask me, this laptop may be a hit for gamers depending on how many games its Switchblade keys can support. Its design is fresh and something players do need aside from a standard keyboard seen on laptops today. However, I’ve already seen two cons on this beast. One is its 60Wh battery life which can only last for 2 and a half hours onplaying games (6 hours on idle) which kind of a deal breaker especially for gamers who are annoyed plugging in the device almost the entire day beating the purpose of playing a laptop for the sake of “mobility”. The other one is its ginormous price tag! I mean, even a 17-inch Alienware laptop with fully customized specs will only set you back for less than 2.5k USD. I wonder what kind of players Razer is truly targeting for this product?
All in all, I think its specifications are hard-core and I love the fact they used a 17-inch display for this beast because lets face it, you wouldn’t enjoy playing Crysis 2 on a 11-inch laptop with a compact keyboard would you?
So far, we’re still waiting for its reviews but I wouldn’t be surprised to see pundits mentioning the two cons I highlighted above, over and over again.
