Lord BlackadderMay 5, 06:36 PMDude. I haven't once mentioned a ban.

These days I'd be satisfied with a hint of awareness.

Fair enough. It took your statement as referring to bans.

Frankly awareness, or more specifically education, is the only solution. Gun owners need more education, particularly those who arm themselves for home defense or concealed carry. If citizens are expected to demonstrate proficiency in driving a car before being allowed on the road - and further proficiency for special kinds of driving (such as racing licenses, commercial licenses, limousine drivers, police driving training etc etc), then gun owners should get considerably more training in self-defense with firearms. Most hunters agree that mandatory hunter-safety classes are a good idea. If that is the case, self-defense training is even more necessary.

Furthermore, the public at large needs to be more educated about laws, regulations and firearms themselves. Fear of firearms can be healthy. Willfull ignorance towards them, not so much.

ktappeMay 3, 04:56 PMwhy do they care for how you use it?Because you then sign a contract that says how you agree to use it. This is outside of that agreement. If you want to sign an agreement to use the data in a different way, I'm sure the carrier will accommodate you.
That's not why.
But get your wallet open.
THAT is why.

carlgoSep 28, 09:56 PMSimple designs have indeed existed for thousands of years, but most of the McMansions going up aren't like that, more like castle imitations. These people have all the money in the world and access to the best architects and designers to build something memorable and they end up getting a McCastle that the Beverly Hillbillys would like.

So, good for Jobs for having some taste and building something worthwhile.

And, yes, there will be a secret ATT antenna buried in the walls so Jobs will think his reception is normal.

I would have a turntable in front of the garage. You can devote less space to the driveway area. A water feature too. Any sign of solar? It is still a big house and will use a lot of energy no matter what.

dumb terminalApr 24, 02:26 PMI hope windows gets rid of the dos command shell and don't have to rely on third party tools like cygwin. If W8 is unix based, it would be glorious.

I hope they don't get rid of the command shell. That would make system administration a real pain in the neck.

Especially when you've been doing system administration since the days of NT 4.0/2000, and use cmd for everything (yes, even tasks that are done easily through a GUI).

I don't see any of this changing anytime soon. That said, Powershell was a great step in the right direction, and added a lot of useful functionality.

dmr727Jul 27, 04:21 PM^^^ that's what I was thinking too. This is a pretty full featured vehicle - once I start looking at all the goodies, a mid 30's price doesn't seem so out of the ballpark. I still have my prejudices against GM - but I'm really trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here.

I'm on Honda's list for their Clarity, but I'm not holding my breath that my name will be drawn anytime soon - I meet all their 'ideal candidate' guidelines, but they seem more interested in giving the first models to celebrities. So it's nice to see some other options out there for me to mull over.

louis FashionApr 8, 03:44 PMBest Buy does this all the time. I purchased a Samsung TV off their Web site for in-store sameday pickup last year, and took my receipt to my local store. They wouldn't give me the TV I already purchased because they were holding all of that model until Sunday because of their Sunday ad flyer. They had at least 10 of that model in stock on their store shelves.

They told me I could come back Sunday to pick it up. Naturally, I refused (this was like Tuesday), called Best Buy Online and had them refund my purchase. Then, purchased from Amazon.

I'll never purchase anything major from them again.

What a group of dolts. The local BBY told my friend that they did NOT take "reservations" I doubt if they will last much longer. Everyone is buying on line.

AppleScruff1May 3, 06:21 PMThis sucks. I don't want to have to pay Verizon an extra $20 a month on top of an already expensive phone bill to do this crap. Will this affect using PDAnet on a jail broken iPhone?

Don't you want Verizon to have record profits?

menlotechnicalApr 20, 12:31 PMPeople who are not geeks - live their lives and will want 'ease of use' and they will want more and more to view the computer as an appliance. Like a toaster or toilet. They will not replace or adjust it until it breaks.
That being said, as the exploits to Windows grows, and less decisions are being made in MS by the old boy team of Gates and his peers... I think there continues to be an invisible hand that drives people away from Windows machines.
Business and most people just want a functioning machine and easy to use UI. They could care less about file systems and USB 3, they just want it to work.
When you have a HUGE mass of people wanting to overtake your Windows computer, with 100's of daily new infections, why would ANYONE want to learn how to surf the web defensively? They just want to surf the web. With Windows, you have to surf defensively. You need antivirus, you need anti malware, you need to dump temp files regularly, protect and delete cookies and do a ton of stuff that is just unrealistic to most of the market.
I question the ideas that Lion Server is going away, that Samba is going to be pushed out, and that NFS will not work. I can't understand why they would put so much effort into a mac mini server and just drop it like Microsoft does: see their book scan project, Sharepoint, MSN Music, Zune players, etc. They chase markets - see Windows seven mobile features - and then they cancel them, leaving people in the cold.
There is a lot in the favor of apple today and going forward. I hope that Jobs has a legacy plan in place whenever he has to leave this Earth. Because there is HUGE opportunity in the next ten years.

Me too!:D

I took the remote that came with my first TV into town and turned the volume of every TV in one shop to maximum one night after close. I also once saw somebody switch a window display to 'Red Hot Dutch' over night, there was a huge crowd of drunk guys with kebabs leering in from the street.:D

CAWjrMar 17, 09:20 AMI wonder how you would have reacted it the "stoner" kid charge your card the entire puchase and pocketed the cash?

I bet if this was the case, the OP would be flipping out on the store manager & demanding some kind of compensation for the error.

It's cases like this that are the reason retailers put in insane return policies or restocking fees. Too many dishonest people out there trying to game the system & retailers finally decided to punish the masses for the dishonesty of the few.

So thanks to people like the OP, we can all be glad that a simple return requires an original receipt, picture ID, credit card, and a sworn affidavit that we purchased our products legally & honestly.

kdarlingMar 28, 10:37 PMAnd please.... don't cry about the 30% margin... it's so freak'n fair by all software distribution practices that is not a reason for any developer not to want to use the AppStore as a channel.

30% is very good if you usually went through others.

If you sell the software yourself online, it's not an attractive deal. A big example was the delay in getting Slingplayer on iOS devices. They could not have been happy about losing $10 per each of tens or hundreds of thousands of downloads.

Obviously, Apple is trying to encourage more Apps to get on iTunes or in the App store. Nothing wrong with that.

Sure, but the point is that this isn't a new award. It's been going on for years and yet suddenly has this requirement that is blatantly geared towards rewarding only those who also give royalties to Apple.

It's their right to do so, but greed is not pretty to watch in any case.

maflynnApr 8, 11:11 AMActually, it depends on what you use your computer for, what your expectations are, and where your priorities lie.

You can say that about any consumer product.
Speaking in general terms, MS has added more to windows, improved performance and reduced the bloat with win7.

Apple has gone the opposite direction, adding bloat and no major feature since 10.5

MagnusVonMagnumApr 30, 07:38 AMNope, it won't happen at all. There is too big of a market for people who write and rely on custom software.

Who said there couldn't be custom software? You'll simply need a developer package. Students might get a special 'exception' area on the App store or private access or whatever, but it doesn't mean they won't start closing down the system at some point. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon....

*LTD*Mar 16, 08:36 AMThis is nonsence. If the average user was interested in just Apple, then why are Apple on a lesser market share for pretty much... everything but MP3 players? How come Android is proving more popular?

You mean all the junk Google flooded the market with in order to inflate their share because they *still* can't make anything even remotely on the level of the iPhone?

Licensing out your OS to anyone that can slam together a box and unloading product via the likes of ZTE and cheap Asian outfits (i.e., the "other" category) is hardly impressive. It's the Wintel way of dong business. Great for pumping up market share, but the profits go to the cream of the crop: Apple. For the rest it's a race to the bottom.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. THIS IS NOT AN APPLE FANSITE! Please go elsewhere if you wish to praise the mighty Apple endlessly. This site is for news and discussion based around Apple products. Not for fans to blow their load.

It's an Apple fansite. It's unavoidable. It *is* however, an unhappy experience for trolls and contrarians. You seem unhappy and exasperated in your posts. Is that maybe an indicator of something?

I'm in 2011. And I'm seeing Android beat iOS in the mobile world, and slowly creeping up in the tablet world. I'm seeing OS X being turned from a pretty advanced OS to an App riddled toy. I'm seeing Apple discontinue server services. I'm seeing Apple making silly mistakes such as clock bugs and adding social networks to media players. I'm seeing Apple still not improve MobileMe.

You're seeing Apple hit new milestones and the competition keeping up the only way they know how: price and universal licensing. ZTE releases more Android junk and HTE releases their 20th variation of the same phone and it's crickets. Meanwhile there's so much as a hint of a new iPhone and the industry and market is just buzzing with excitement. The reason is simple: when it comes to Apple, consumer anticipation is in line with expectation.

As for the rest, Apple is following the same formula they always have. It's the ideal of engineering and design: simplify, simplify, simplify. Cut, cut, cut. Then perfect what's left over.

This is what results in record sales. With profits to match.

Cheers.

NorthgroveApr 29, 01:41 PMYes! Now analyze this build and post an article about it for me, minions! :D

rdownsApr 17, 12:12 PMAwesome, to make enough time for this lets just forget everything after the Great Depression because it's not like that junk matters as much as gays being persecuted. Seriously, the Holocaust and the Rape of Nanjing are totally trivial events compared to the Stonewall riots. We should totally drop coverage of the bombing of Pearl Harbor to make room for a lecture on how NAMBLA doesn't represent gays. To top it off we should ditch the civil rights movement in favor of the White Night riots!

 there is no time available to teach this, if we teach this something else gets whacked. As is we get to the 1930s by the tests which go to the 1980s...

Where do you get this stuff?

dalvin200Sep 12, 04:44 AMFriends aren't post.

u beat me to it!! i was going to say a similar thing ;)

nuckinfutzOct 18, 09:10 PMBut seriously, the new codecs aren't that magical and even with VC1 or H.264, it's pretty easy to run into a barrier with a 25 to 30 GB disc size. Sony shouldn't have any troubles with fitting films at full quality on a 50GB disc. Also keep in mind that the layer substrate within BluRay is a lot thinner than DVD/HD-DVD discs and they claim that a disc could potentially hold up to 12 layers

Therein lies the issue. HD DVD's first titles had an avg bitrate of 16-20Mbps with peaks of almost 30Mbps. Batman Begins just shipped with an avg bitrate of 13Mpbs and it's PQ is top notch. That translates to roughly 6GB per hour so it was pretty easy for them to toss this 2.5 hour movie onto a 30GB disc and have it consume only 18-20GB for the picture. Add in your lossless audio track, Dolby Digital+ and IME linked to the extras in that final 10GB and you're fine. Speaking with some Microsofties about their VC-1 they believe they can get down to 9Mbps for HD material and 11Mbps for "comfortable" material so there's still room for improvement. 50GB is cool for movies that just have a huge amount of extras though.

so Holographic storage is going to be the next form of optical media,

I doubt we see another widely distributed movie format on disc. Both Blu-Ray and HD DVD can integrate network content along with the disc syncronized. This is just the precursor to downloading the whole movie without a physical medium. It'll take a decade to get last mile coverage to rural areas but broadband speed and pervasiveness will ensure that warehousing packaged discs goes the way of the dodo.

We'll see. If yet another disc format comes out I want to see

10-bit per channel RGB
4:2:2 color sampling
huge bandwidth
3840x2160 resolution
