slugheadOct 28, 06:09 PMThe thin veneer is off the vast majority of people that clamor for OSS.

Whenever I hear the OSS crowd scream "Software should be FREE!" I translate that to mean "I refuse to pay someone for their work, thus I will STEAL it"!

I don't blame Apple. The OSS community abused what they had and turned to piracy by stealing the GUI. Kudos Apple.

I don't think there are many out there who think all software should be free. I think these OSS advocates just want as much free stuff as possible, for many reasons.

People want OSS because it spurs innovation. Keep in mind that OS X is built on OSS, and that's one of the reasons it's more secure and more powerful than windows.

That's not to mention the fact that Apple has taken OS X from infancy to the mature OS that it is today at a record pace. This is, in no small part, due to the FREE code they're "stealing."

Apple doesn't sell operating systems for profit, they sell HARDWARE. These people over at OSx86 are trying to create a product that doesn't really exist: OS X on BIOS hardware.

EidorianNov 16, 08:16 PMYes. And AMD/ATI is currently working on new laptop CPU/GPU chipsets. Their first intensive collaboration. Apple and ATI have a strong link. Why not have AMD systems?

Intel's GPU solutions are pretty bad.

As someone mentioned, the x86 version of OS X works fine on AMD cpus. It's a hack, but it runs fine. Then again both are trying to move the industry toward multi-array multi-core CPU's with all sorts of functions beyond just being a general purpose CPU.

I saw a better page with pictures too. I'll try to find it.

LeemoSep 12, 03:55 AMI genuinely think that if Apple are introducing a movie store today they're going to have something rather special up their sleeve - I think pricing should be extremely competitive compared to DVDs otherwise what's the point?

Digital downloads of films (sorry, movies) needs to be made appealing to the masses in the same way music was, with cheap individual prices that compared favourably to CDs - people have gotten used to owning only digital copies of their music, however movies are still in that tangible area of hard media, and I feel Apple are going to have to really be priced competitively to alter public perception of digital distribution of movie content.

Not that they *won't* of course, but I don't think it's going to be necessarily easy.

If they introduce HD content I'll be a very happy bunny.

*LTD*Apr 24, 03:14 PMthen why does Apple keep terminal which is nothing more than Apple version of command prompt.

I was referring to the poster's comment about a hypothetical MS transition to Unix, which won't happen any time soon for a lot of reasons.

The command line is quite useful, actually. There are some very handy Terminal commands out there.

Here's a fun one, which might already be familiar:

Type this into the Terminal window and hit return:

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

It's been a while, I'm not sure if they actually finished it.

benbowAug 11, 12:27 AMThe 23" display is now $999
The 30" display is now $1999

Apple could fill that $1000 hole with a nice 26" cinema display. It would be perfect in our household.

Are there "25-27" LCDs out there that Apple could sell for say $1499? Has Dell or HP filled this hole yet?

VideoFreekMay 4, 03:43 PMI tend to agree with you regarding a physician's readiness to provide gun safety lessons, but I think you're missing the bigger picture. Do you think that the government should be OUTLAWING physicians from asking their patients questions? It doesn't matter what the question is... is that the role of government? No, I've already said I think the bill is complete nonsense. I'm only addressing Dr. Choi's assertion (in the OP) that he has a duty to pry into non-medical aspects of the lives of his patients.

MacinDocSep 12, 12:28 AMIt's a start. What's tricky is the execution itself. Other studios will join the bandwagon like they did with music store.
Maybe, but to impact the market, you need a critical mass. Didn't iTMS have 200,000-300,000 songs when it opened?
It's not just thinksecret that's reporting this.
Who else is? Anyway, my point was more that if Disney is all the iTunes Movie Store has to offer, it will look like a huge marketing failure, and the media will feed on it... If it's true, expect predictions of Apple's pending demise on Wednesday...

wovelMay 3, 06:45 PMContract terms require "consideration" from both parties to be legally binding. Consideration is something you provide to the other party (i.e., money from you, data services from your carrier).

What consideration are the carriers offering you for tethering? You're already paying $X for Y GB of data used on your phone. It doesn't matter to the carrier if your Netflix app is using it, or your tethering app is sending the data to your laptop. Nothing changes on their end, they just send the data that you've already paid for to your phone, and your phone handles the rest.

You're right, it is black and white. It's a scam aimed at exploiting consumers like yourself who don't know any better, with an illegal contract term. I hope this goes to court soon, before the carriers in Canada (where I am) try to pull the same BS.

Obviously you have learned about contracts, but have no practical experience with what the terms you are using actually mean...

thank god you are not a brain surgeon. This is no different then paying for internet @ home and getting a modem (cell phone) that only allows connection to one PC (cell phone). Then being forced to pay an extra fee just to split the signal to another PC (use a router in this example).

It is quite a bit different actually. Your home Internet service does not likely limit you to a single device. It is however likely limiting you to your house. If you start hooking up the whole neighborhood through your home Internet connection, they would be well within their rights to charge you more money.

Good try though..

aliensporebombApr 25, 11:50 AMCuriouser and curiouser.

If it's a fake, whoever did it did a pretty interesting job on it.

It looks plausible.

I mean we had:

iphone 3g
iphone 3gs

why not
iphone 4
iphone 4gs

Which would give incentive for people to go for the white one I guess.

then the 5 comes out later?

stoidAug 7, 07:05 PMHmm..I wonder if this means that we wont see the issues plaguing the 23"s (poor color, banding, etc etc etc)

If so, time to make an upgrade!

I called my local Apple Store and the guy I talked to didn't even know that there were 'new' monitors. So I ordered mine online, pronto!

StellaAug 1, 10:17 AMThis is just one more reason why socialism doesn't work. It takes away the incentive of a company to put a product in the country, and the consumers ultimately suffer.

NekbethApr 26, 08:23 PMOf course I like help Dejo and I know you have help a lot people, you have even helped me before this thread and I appreciate it a lot. I said that because so many seasoned developers just throw that bomb at newbies so often when they try to find answers in forums (not just this one), it happens not only in Programming but in many other professional environments, people just shoot to kill when some new guy makes a basic mistake, but luckily not all, some people do like to help (or enjoy) and have the patience to explain even the dumbest detail. But hey, it's cool.. We're all here to share and learn after all. I'll be glad to see you contribute to my threads, but you know.. that is up to you.

mrkgooJan 12, 04:21 PMC'mon...this is the CEO of Apple presenting at Macworld. He was hardly going to be subdued, not with a bunch of fanboys and shareholders present.

Anyway, I saw most of the iPhone stuff as excitement rather than arrogance. It's a reason I believe the ApplTV was 'previewed' last year, so all focus could be on the iPhone. I think Steve was genuinely excited to present it to us.

However, I do think that the pie charts explainingthe market share of Zune is a bit underhanded. If Microsft did the same thing with market share for OS, it'd be the same. 2% market share is pretty damned good for Zune, considering competition in the market - any other mp3 player would love to get that kind of market share. I'd prefer it if Apple focused more on selling theri own products in this regard, than downplaying others.

IJ ReillyOct 19, 01:56 PMI couldn't disagree with you more.

I'm sure you could -- go ahead, try me. :)

With each and every release of a new OS (going back beyond Windows), Microsoft has made hyperbolic claims about how good it was going to be. As anyone who's followed this for a while knows, Microsoft's claims rarely live up to reality. The fact is, a lot of people never even bothered to get onto the XP bandwagon. Do you think they're going to be excited about Vista? Unfortunately for Microsoft, their "good enough" philosophy also works for a lot of their customers. They're used to not being motivated by newer and theoretically better. As you admit, the first version of Vista is going to be a dog, just as the first versions of 95, 98 and XP were. People do learn that the risks can outweigh the benefits. My attitude detector reports that hardly anybody cares about Vista.

All that being said, Microsoft will sell a zillion copies of Vista. Most of those will be through the OEM pipeline. The OEMs will buy it because they don't have a choice. This is how each and every version of Windows has become a "success." It's Microsoft's dirty little secret.

ezekielrage_99Jan 15, 06:06 PMDude this is insane if its real. Yah think???

I wasn't saying if it's real or not it's the fact that Gizmodo just did a huge prank and they listed a Keynote supposedly from Apple. Real or not Apple is very protective about information about themselves.

munkeryApr 17, 06:36 PMHow does Gnome 3.0 on Linux compare to the new UI in OSX Lion?

I've been playing around with Gnome 3.0, and it seems like the designers have a similar philosophy about desktop navigation.

Gnome 3.0 Preview (This is not my video):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joBXc3IGRBw

That's a pretty sick OS. I haven't ever run Fedora on a computer of mine, but my uncle swears by it. That video has convinced me to run it on my next box.

I like fedora over ubuntu. I haven't run fedora for a while, I think I'll take second look when the new version comes out.

I wish Ubuntu went with Gnome 3 over Unity. Fedora is great but it is more "free" than Ubuntu as Fedora includes fewer/no? proprietary drivers by default so it is a little bit more work to get running on some hardware.

The next Fedora may be worth the extra effort.

Here is a link for those looking to stay up to date on Win 8. http://www.winrumors.com/

Or, at least looking to retaliate?

LightSpeed1Apr 14, 01:52 AMSo, on the left side of the above linked page it says they're $120 and on the right side of the same page it says they're $140! So, which is it?Shipping is $20 on the right side they have all ready added it in. on the white set it says $120 on left and right, but if you notice it also says for local pick up. It's only when you hit the shipping tab that you can set it from local pick up to UPS ground. After that, both the white set and the black set are $140 after shipping. No Tax.

Thomas VeilMar 4, 06:05 AMGo Ohio! Crush the unions! Return to fiscal sanity. I'm sorry, but I just have to smile at some of this. It manages to be self-contradictory and over the top, all in just nine words. I could almost see you waving your pom-pons while you wrote it.

Sorry, but you guys are self-destructing, and while it's painful to watch what you're doing to the economy and to good, hard-working people, at least we're seeing you implode in ways far greater than we'd ever dreamed. Keep watching those polls. You're doing everything you can to help the Democrats in 2012.

Oh, and please stop getting tea stains all over my flag.
